Do you know that a person who is not duly qualified but performs or witnesses as a marriage officer the ceremony of marriage, knowing that any of the matters required by law for the validity of a marriage has not been performed, so that the marriage is void or unlawful on any ground, commits a misdemeanour and is liable to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 3 years. Section 268 of Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and Section 296 (4) of Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30).
